Minneapolis Trees

Every public tree in the 2023 Minneapolis inventory, and every tree the Park Board planted from 2019 to 2023, one dot each.

Two hundred sixty-eight thousand trees. The map opens on downtown; zoom out for the whole city. Filter by genus, or narrow to a planting year, a street or park setting, a root stock, or a planting program, and the map and the counts follow. Hover any dot for the tree behind it. Maple alone shows how much of the canopy rides on one genus; ash alone shows what emerald ash borer left.

Data: all four layers come from a map titled City of Minneapolis Public Tree Inventory on ArcGIS. Despite its title, it is not published by the City of Minneapolis or the Park Board; the owner is a private ArcGIS account belonging to an independent Minneapolis researcher. By that researcher's own description, the 2023 inventory layer is the Minneapolis–Saint Paul Long-Term Ecological Research program's 2023 Minneapolis-Saint Paul Urban Tree Inventory (Adrienne Keller, Leslie Brandt, Jeannine Cavender-Bares, Joseph Knight, Sarah Hobbie), and the 2019 to 2023 planting layers were extracted from Park Board planting records filed with City Forest Credits for carbon offset projects. I have not verified either against the original sources. As republished, the inventory layer carries genus or species and a location per tree; the 2022 planting layer adds location type, root stock, size, planting program and date, the 2023 layer a common name, street and planting method, and the 2019 to 2021 layer coordinates only. Values are shown as filed; the planting layers include trees that may since have failed or been removed. Fourteen 2023 planting records without coordinates were dropped. Genus for the 2023 planting layer was inferred from its common name.
